Article - Head Outside’s great guide for a family camping trip to Wales

After the Euros 2016, Wales’s performance in the competition has put them back on the map for many holiday goers and campers. Even before the football, Wales was still a great place to head to for the summer, especially for avid campers up and down the UK.

Here at Head Outside, we have visited Wales many times to experience the Welsh culture, by exploring the local areas and embracing the beautiful views and countryside it has to offer. Not only that, there are many great places, activities and fun to be had for various people; making it the perfect place for families. With stunning views to explore and scrumptious places to eat and drink, you can expect an extremely enjoyable family camping trip to Wales.

In this post, we’ll be going through various things that can be done in Wales, whilst also recommending some quality camping sites for you and the family to visit. So, stay tuned and enjoy our guide for an enjoyable family camping trip to Wales.

Make your trip to Wales whatever you want it to be
Not all campers and holiday goers are the same – some of us like to have a packed holiday; filled with activities and day trips, whilst others prefer a relaxed time to take in the culture, relax on the beach and spend quality time with the family. Wales is a great location for any type of getaway, and we highly recommend it as an affordable trip, especially for affordable campsites – you can find our recommended and affordable campsites online.

Wales offers various outdoor adventures and UK activities. So for couples looking for fun, a solo traveller looking to take in the sights, or a family looking for adventure, Wales has it all, including biking, foraging, fishing, sports, horse riding, rocks & ropes, climbing, walking, hiking and watersports.

Three quality summer activities in Wales
We still have some summer time left to experience, so why not embrace this time with a family getaway to Wales? The weather has taken a bit of a tumble of late, but we’re confident the sun will come back again before the end of summer. So, here are some good quality activities to do during your time in Wales.

Climb Snowdonia
Summertime in Wales opens up many opportunities for you. If you're someone who appreciates views, enjoys hiking and want a challenge, then climbing Snowdonia is certainly for you. It's fun for the whole family, and not only that, it gets the kids outside and exercising. This will be a challenge for them as well as you; which can only mean that they won't have the freedom to walk and look down at their phone, catching Pokémon on Pokémon Go.

Kayaking in the sea – Pembrokeshire
With Wales being a little country, it can only mean open seas, which gives you the opportunity for sea kayaking; which is available in Pembrokeshire. With calm seas in the summer, you'll be able to get to grips with kayaking, and explore the open waters. It's great for all ages, and you'll have the opportunity to explore caves and see beautiful bays around St David's Head.

Pony trekking – Brecon Beacons

If you want to explore a beautiful National Park but don’t particularly feel like using your own legs, then pony trekking is your alternative. Llanthony is a beautiful part of Wales, especially Brecon Beacons. Whilst your pony clip clops up into the hills, you can jump off at any point; meaning you can settle for a picnic – with a view to die for, whilst you enjoy a pork pie, slice of cake or a glass of wine.

Where to stay in Wales? Our recommended campsites in Wales
With over 4800 campsites across the UK, we have 847 campsites in Wales to recommend to you.

Our first Welsh campsite is in SouthWalesValleys, Bridgend – and is called Welsh Caravan & Camping – which is a serene caravan and camping park; nestled away from any hustle and bustle. This place is perfect to be in the country, and will allow you to best utilise mountain biking, digital augmented reality trails, castles, churches and play on some of the best golf courses. The campsite has wifi, a toilet block, laundrette and disabled facilities; making it a great camping site for all campers – even for your dog, being a dog friendly camping zone.

Our second recommendation is our Willow Springs Campsite, which is a classic family run campsite, situated at Llwyn y Ffynnon Farm in Glyncorrwg. Being surrounded by woodlands, you can certainly experience pony trekking here. This campsite is perfect for those adventure seeking campers who want to explore, ride bikes off road, run, jog, and star gaze in the evening. Equipped with a drying room, showers, toilet block, washing up area, recycling points and renewable energy, this campsite is modern and well-equipped. This campsite is also a dog friendly zone, and welcomes campfires for other Willow Springs campers to appreciate too.
